To Trend or Not To Trend? What’s Trending At BGH

I was recently looking back on some of my notes. Yes, I’m a journal hoarder. Let me hear ya loud and clear with a, “ME TOO!” These notes are from stupid things that I’ve done with paint and stain to my list of goals. Notes that I’ve made about what I’ve learned, to Bible verses I don’t want to forget, to a really good recipe for stuffed chicken.

But, something made me stop and pause and think about home styling trends. I read my own words out loud.

“My home must be light, soulful, special, blessed, creative, living, purposeful, warm, welcoming, practical, pleasant, tidy, and resourceful. It must work hard for our family.”

Notice that the words “on trend” isn’t up there in that word mix? My home is mostly all farmhouse, with a bit of modern, a dash of boho, and a sprinkle of whatever. I’m I panicking if suddenly some new trend comes along and I’m not on board, missed the train, and am 20 miles from the station.

Honestly, I did go through a panic stage.

What if the shiplap trend fades? What if the whole farmhouse look fades? My whole house will be out of trend. How do I keep achieving this when I love some new trends and hate some new trends? Easy.

Then, I came to my senses.

If It Makes You Happy

Don’t do what everyone else is doing just because you have no idea what you’re doing and a trend is easy. Don’t rip up the tile, if you love the tile! If you love carpeting, keep the carpeting. Don’t change the style you love to keep your home on trend. Does that make sense?

Some of us get stuck in a trend and really hate it. Just like fashion, and teaching supplies, and everything else in life, things go in and out. Just make sure that you keep your home like my message above for your people to function positively. Your home must tell your story and if you’re happy with it, so be it.

Homestyle Farmhouse Trends

Let’s take globes for examples. The globe fad was really hot a few years ago. I couldn’t find a globe if I wanted too because they became way overpriced and very much in demand. A simple schoolhouse globe turned into a crazy reality that I may have to wrestle and haggle with that lady ahead of me to buy that spin-tastic magic ball of land and ocean to add to my collection. I bought it even if I wasn’t crazy about it because it was the trend, yo!

That’s not really sticking to being smart about it. Three globes were enough and filled my need. I didn’t need all the globes created on Earth to replicate Earth going around one room.

It’s not a bad thing to be on trend

Well, what’s the next trend? Trends can be fun and boring. Trends can be interesting. Trends can be that feeling that you’re about to get sick. Trends can be a mad dash. Trends make the world go round. We all do them. But what is the focus, need, and honest to goodness feel that it is creating for you?

The Trend Menu-Don’t Over Eat

Don’t call the trend police on me yet. I’m not putting trends down because I do love certain things, but what’s the limit? How many “Homemade Pie” signs does one need? How many throw pillows. How many chalkboards? How many? How many? That’s when I have to take a mental check-up and tell myself to stop for a minute. Not all trends are for you. You don’t need to buy everything “on trend” and saturate your life. Refer back to the globe story above.

I’ve done it, take it from me.

So Smarty Pants-What’s Trending In Your Home?

Okay, let’s get down to it. This is a fun thing for you to do to. Sit in one room. Take a warm or cold glass of something with you and just look around. Make a list of what is trending in your home, in that room, at that moment. It helps you with two things. First, it will help you to see what style you are currently in. Second, it will help you to see if you have to much trend and maybe you will feel the need to de-trend and give some to friends.

I might need Marie Kondo back in my life. Regardless, these things make my home cozy and yes are on trend, the farmhouse trend that is. Well, they are in my farmhouse brain. So, it’s not a bad thing, but I had to put the breaks on when buying more “Farmhouse Items”

Idea! Do A “Shop My Home” Night

Invite some friends over to shop your stuff that you want to release from your trend collection. I have stuff/trends, that I just don’t need any more. I love to decorate, but I just can’t find a place for the things I have. I’d rather have a group of friends over for a “shop and take” where there can be a charge or no charge, maybe a door entrance fee, the way you decide to create it is your choice. Just a thought: If it’s stuff that you have paid for, set up a $10 flat fee. Either way, it’s a win because you are sending things off that you love with people that you love.
